This organism may be part of commensal flora of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. A. haemolyticum is associated with pharyngitis, typically with a rash (erythematous, scarlatiniform, urticarial or morbilliform involving trunk and extremities, sparing face, palms, and soles) in young adults.

Although they are the etiologic agents of distinct human infections, both organisms are frequently overlooked, which results in missed or delayed diagnoses. Gram stain, colonies Round 1, 2020 Specimens On the slide there are three air-fixed microbial suspensions S001, S002 and S003. Frost end of slide S003 S002 S001 Examinations Gram stain, colonies Caution The slides are unfixed and unstained and should therefore be handled as infectious materials. Fixing kills the microbes. Storage and use A genus of facultatively anaerobic, gram-positive bacteria in the family ACTINOMYCETACEAE, order ACTINOMYCETALES. They are obligate parasites of the PHARYNX in humans and farm animals. (Source: National Library of Medicine 2013 MeSH Scope Note and Classification) Images Figure 1.

A.haemolyticum was identified by typical colony morphology, Gram stain, catalase reaction (negative), and carbohydrate fermentation tests (glucose, lactose, sucrose, mannitol, and maltose) and reverse CAMP test. selected one strain from each of six DNAtypes which represented79%ofall isolates availableinourA. haemolyti-cumcollection. Therefore, it seemslikely that the relatively small numberofstrains in this studyrepresent agoodcross section ofA. haemolyticum diversity in this region. Colonies appeared translucent … It is a Gram-positive, nonmotile and non-sporulating bacterium. The strain described in this study was isolated from infections amongst American soldiers of certain islands of the North and West Pacific. This is the first completed sequence of a member of the genus Arcanobacterium and the ninth type strain genome from the family Actinomycetaceae. selected one strain from each of six DNAtypes which represented79%ofall isolates availableinourA. haemolyti-cumcollection.

Biochemical testing identified the organism as A. haemolyticum.

This group of Arcanobacterium haemolyticum; Arcanobacterium hippocoleae  Staph saprophyticus has a thick peptidoglycan cell wall, which takes in purple dye when Gram stained - so this is a gram-positive bacteria.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum Small Gram-positive rods in a culture from a throat smear (Gram stain). Arcanobacterium is a non-sporing Gram positive bacilli that occurs as a part of normal flora of human skin and pharynx. Named initially as Corynebacterium hemolyticum, it was first reported from the cultures of throat and skin samples in 1946.
